A Bit of Dog Training

Dog kennel training, also called Crate training, is known as an excellent way to house train your puppy or dog. However, the dog kennel training has additional uses besides house training. By putting your puppy inside his kennel when you leave the house for awhile, you will stop your puppy from chewing up anything when you leave him alone in the house. When the kennel training is done properly, the dog will be so comfortable with his kennel, that he will picture the kennel as his den.

By making sure your dog is comfortable in his kennel, just like a dog in his den, you will have good success kennel training your pet. Never place your pet inside the kennel when you are angry about his behavior. If you make that mistake, you will be creating a negative type of impression about the kennel. Instead of feeling like a secure den, his kennel will now feel like a jail. You don’t want to confuse your dog by doing that. Before even bringing your new puppy home, you need to select a kennel from your local pet supply store. The kennel you pick out should be large enough for your dog to use even after he is full grown.The kennel will need to be the appropriate size for your dog to fit in when he is fully grown, allowing him room to stand, turn around and lay down in. Naturally, a large breed dog will need a larger crate than a smaller dog. Because the kennel may have more room than a puppy needs to stand, turn around or lay down in, you should partition the kennel during the house training stage. By keeping the space restricted, you are helping  to deter the puppy from soiling his crate. If too much room remains in the kennel, the puppy make just pick a corner as the toilet. After the puppy has entered his kennel, give him another treat and some praise-you want to let him know it’s a fun place to be.

Let him go in and out a few times, before you close the door while he is in the kennel. When you begin the kennel training, only keep the door shut for a short time, so he doesn’t get anxious about it.  It is a good idea to put his kennel in a room where the family is most active, so he doesn’t feel lonely and start to whine. If he is near the family, your puppy will feel like he is  a part of things, even from inside his kennel, and will have less reason to start whining.

Your younger puppy will need frequent chances to go potty outside. To be really safe, with young puppies 2 months and younger, taking them out every hour or so wouldn’t be a bad idea to stay on the safe side of things. A rule of thumb often used is to allow  about an hour per month of age between breaks seems to work, but be sensitive to your own puppy’s particular needs-puppy bladders are tiny at that age.  As your puppy’s body develops he will be able to go longer between breaks.

Puppies often begin whining from inside their kennels, but you don’t want to acknowledge the whining by talking to him or letting him out. If you do, it will only reinforce him, and teach him to whine some more the next time he is in the kennel. Your pup may whine to announce a potty break is needed, but otherwise don’t give him attention until it is his scheduled time for a break. Before long, you will know how to recognize the different sound of the potty break whine from the “let me out of here” whine.
