How To Get Your Dog Potty Trained |
Any parent who gets a new puppy will be happy their children are so delighted but they will worry about the matter of potty training. Getting a new puppy means you must also accept you have to manage some tasks such as this. Without it you may have your soft furnishings smelly and damaged so get it done properly. There is also the foul smell that has a tendency to linger all over your home. There’s no way round it and if you don’t like it you must potty train your puppy.
Potty training should not be too difficult when you know that the dog is one of the few really intelligent animals. Start out knowing that you need to be very attentive to any signs given by your dog when he needs to empty his body wastes. Circles and scratching are the two most common signs to watch out for and when your dog starts scratching at the door it may be urgent. Understanding what these signs are and what they mean are half the battle when potty training a puppy.
It can become a chore to open the door each time your dog displays signs of needing to pee so having a doggy door can make life a lot easier. The benefit of a puppy door is that your dog can go outside anytime nature calls without needing you to open the door for him.
Walking your dog once in the morning and then again at night will help him to become more regular in his bodily functions. When you arrive at the place you want him to pee or poop wait there until he does and then give him a lot of congratulations and encouragement.
Praise is important to a dog so when you praise him for doing his business in the right place he will remember another time. Keep reminding him where he should do his bodily functions and eventually he will know that is where he is supposed to go. All puppies make mistakes but don’t be tempted to try punishment as it will only make him more nervous. Your dog may be nervous about what is the right thing to do so you should reinforce the good things he does and show disappointment when he does wrong and slowly you will potty train him.
You must keep a watchful eye on your puppy all the time while you are training him. Dogs are quick to learn but sometime that may not be fast enough for you and your patience may be tested. As you train your puppy you should give him lots of affection to show you love him and he will want to please you.
Yes potty training your dog can be rather tiresome and repetitive. Potty training will prove it’s worth one day when you realize that your puppy is house clean. The stink of the untrained puppy will disappear and you will have a clean home once again.
