Getting A Dog Is Just The First Step – Next Comes The Training

Most children would love to have a dog and they plead with their parents to get one. A lot of kids parents can only think of all the trouble a dog could cause them. Parents often give in to the constant pressure but it may take the kids some time to convince them.

Now you have agreed to get a dog you have to choose the sort of dog you want. With the type of dog chosen you now need to find where to get it from and you could get one from the local dog rescue pound.

Finally you have your new dog at home and the first thing it might do is make a mess on your carpet. House training suddenly becomes very important. A clean animal such as a dog will not want a mess near it’s bed so they need to understand where to go to do their business.

Your new dog does not yet know what is right or wrong and it is probably nervous as well. Treat it gently at first but keep a close eye on it and when it looks uncomfortable take it to the potty area immediately. When it does things right give it a lot of affection and tell him what a good dog he is.

Most dogs are intelligent and can learn new things quickly but you need to practice to reinforce what they have learned. Be very patient and don’t get annoyed about accidents as they will happen and are not done on purpose.

Your dog should have easy access to the potty area so he can go whenever he feels the need. When he does give him lots of affection and congratulate him to show what a good dog he is. Once your puppy understands what to do he will be eager to do it right and be praised for his behaviour.

There are lots more lessons to come later but first you need a house trained dog. A puppy will enjoy being trained to sit by your kids. Kids and dogs can both be very patient and will practice for hours.

You can move on to further advanced training with your dog once it understands commands like sit and stay. You should teach your dog to walk properly on a leash by teaching it to walk to heel.

Another important lesson to train a dog is to resist the temptation to run off and investigate things.Your dog will want to run off and look at new things but it must understand that it must wait for your instruction.

Strangers in the street may not like your dog jumping up at them so make sure it behaves well. If you love having your dog lick your face remember that other people would hate it.

Becoming a dog owner has rewards but also responsibilities and you take on the duty of care when you get a dog. You must prevent it being a nuisance to other people and make sure it is obedient to you. Trained dogs behave well around other animals and people will see your dog is a credit to you.
